The Bakarčić-Simonić Tannery

The Bakarčić-Simonić Tannery once operated in Ružićeva Street, at today’s number 29. The founders of the tannery were Anton Bakarčić and Ljudevit Ružić. However, Ružić soon withdrew from the company and was replaced by Anton Simonić. Anton Bakarčić died in 1889. The tannery was initially a modest manufacturing plant, but after 1900 it experienced a lot of investments, it was modernized, expanded and the production and employment increased. Paper Mill

The administration building was erected in 1827. It has been preserved until today, but in modified form.  It is a two-storey building, built to the greatest extent with reinforced concrete, with wall additions made of brick.  The stone decorations on the door and window lintels have been preserved. The Matešić Mill

The Matešić Mill operated in the immediate vicinity of the Matković Mill, below upper Orehovica, in Podbadanj, on the left bank of the Rječina river. It was probably built in the 1840s, because, according to archival sources, Antonio Mattessich wrote to the Glorious Council in 1839 and sought permission to build a mill on Rječina.
