Hotel Jadran

address: 46 Šetalište XIII divizije
Period: Secession/Art Noveau
Kind: Immovable material heritage
Century: 20
Year: 1914
Purpose: business

The Hotel Jadran was built for the commissioner Konzorcij F. Tomašić i drugovi in 1914 in Art Nuveau style, with its appertaining beach. It kept its original purpose of a catering facility to this day.

The idea for constructing a beach and an accommodation facility on Pećine, Sušak, appeared in 1911. However, the construction of the edifice prolonged as the city authorities stalled with the building permit, and also owing to the sea coast arrangement.

Although this was a large investment and a large project, the name of the architect was not preserved. This is a rectangular building oriented north-south. Originally, on its north side the building had two floors, and on the south side, owing to the inclination of the ground, it had five floors. After the Second World War, another floor was added.

The north façade has a rhythmic structure with mildly protruding pilasters and minimal elegant decoration, achieved by blind balustrades under the windows. The south side is oriented more towards its tourist function, so it is indented with balconies and continues into terraces with cabins dug in the rock underneath.

The hotel had its own electric lighting and was open throughout the year, both summer and winter. Although war broke out soon after it had been built, causing it to work poorly, the owners kept it open, proud of its attraction. The beach was equally favoured as the hotel, especially among the local inhabitants.

Today the Hotel Jadran is a part of the company Jadran Hotels d.d., founded on 1 April 1963, from the hotels Park, Jadran, Neboder, Kontinental and a few smaller catering facilities.

Valorization:

The building is not included in the List of Protected Cultural Goods in the Republic of Croatia Register of Cultural Goods.
