House Milcenich-Cerniak

address: 25 Korzo
Period: Secession/Art Noveau
Kind: Immovable material heritage
Century: 20
Year: 1905
Purpose: residental business

The house Milcenich-Cerniak was built (adapted) in 1905 according to a modern project by Emilio Ambrosini.

Ambrosini continued with Art Nuveau motifs by designing alterations on the edifice which, according to his sketches, relied upon the already arranged house Schittar.

He introduced wide modern windows throughout the height of the floor, floral and leaf-like decorations, round windows which brought a spirit of Vienna Art Nuveau to the area. In accordance with the idea of preserving the Mediterranean heritage, he used laurel leaves for decoration, situated under the mascherones on the second floor balcony doors.

The ground floor and the first floor were intended for business purposes, a photographic equipment shop whose windows were directed towards the street. The second floor was intended for residential purposes and was open towards the street through a balcony with glass door.

Besides being famous as the narrowest structure in the city, it had an elevator installed already in 1906.

Valorization:

The building is a valuable and unique example of Art Nuveau in Rijeka. It is not protected as an individual cultural good on the List of Protected Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia Register of Cultural Goods.
